Definition:
Flash points are run to determine volatility of petroleum products.
It is a measure of the
temperature to which a sample must be heated under specific conditions to
produce a flammable mixture of vapor and air.
Purpose:
Results of flash points can be used to detect contamination of fuels and
lubes. A reduced flash point and
viscosity on an engine lube suggests dilution with fuel, possibly caused by leaking
injectors, fuel lines, general poor condition of equipment, or improper operating
conditions. Low flash on a diesel or kerosene often caused by contamination with gasoline
during transport or storage.
New engine oils usually
flash above 400 F, some at over 500 F.
